Cousins FAQ
Understanding cousin relationships can be a bit confusing.
Fortunately, we have a few tools and diagrams to make this easier
to understand.
•
What is a second cousin? Second cousins share a great-
grandparent. Visit our what is a second cousin page for more
information.
•
First cousin once removed: First cousins share a grandparent.
But, the 1x removed reference can be confusing. Whenever
you see the term “removed” you are referring to a cousin of a
different generation. So, for example, the children of your
first cousin are first cousins once removed. Your first cousins
1x removed will be second cousins of your children.
